EMDR Therapy
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) was developed as a breakthrough therapy with a special capacity to overcome the effects of psychological trauma. Clients frequently report no longer feeling stuck in past issues or experiences, all while building positive mental resources and healthy behaviors for the future.
EMDR is an eight-phase treatment that comprehensively identifies and addresses experiences that have overwhelmed the brain’s natural resilience or coping capacity. Through EMDR therapy, clients are able to reprocess traumatic information until it is no longer disturbing and psychologically disruptive. Thus, they can move beyond the traumatic symptoms and/or harmful coping strategies.
During this procedure, clients tend to process the memory in a way that leads to a peaceful resolution. This often results in increased insight regarding previously disturbing events as well as long-held negative thoughts about the self. For example, a survivor of abuse may come to realize that she was not to blame for what happened, that the event is really over, and, as a result, she can regain a general sense of safety in her world. Repeated studies show that by using EMDR, people can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference.
Already have a primary therapist? We can provide concurrent EMDR therapy to complement (but not replace) your primary therapy.
